Tell us about your life before you started the program. How did you feel about yourself and your body?
I was overweight, out of shape, and hated seeing myself in the mirror. If I was to get on a cruise ship, I’m afraid the crew would mistake me for a whale and start throwing harpoons at me. I did not feel great at all about my body, and had been trying different ways to lose weight (gym membership, Hydroxycut pills, starvation, etc.). Nothing seemed to work, and I was getting frustrated. Diets came and diets left, and eventually the weight would come right back. After returning home from Iraq in 2011, my marriage ended, and things got worse when I got injured at work and had to have knee surgery. While off work, I packed on even more weight sitting around and at one point, I reached 235 pounds. My activity level was very low, and I would get tired very easily. I would end up taking naps during my lunch break at work. I was shoving chips, soda, and fatty crap into my system, because I was depressed about not losing weight and seeing any results.
What inspired you to change your life and begin your transformation journey?
I currently work in law enforcement as a deputy sheriff, and I had been monitoring the life change that a former co-worker went through a few years back using Beachbody and P90X. We had discussed me becoming a Coach, but I had been going through some personal and financial issues after coming home from Iraq in June 2011. Faced with a pending divorce and financial troubles with the IRS, I was pretty much tied down from pulling the trigger on joining Beachbody. I was at a pretty low point in my life, and I stayed the course to get myself out of the pit. After getting past my difficulties, I finally made the decision to commit to losing weight and getting back into great shape. My Coach, Chris Reed, was very supportive and recommended 21 Day Fix and Shakeology. And this is where my wonderful transformation journey began. In August 2015, I decided to commit and accept success as the only option!
What is the greatest challenge you faced before beginning the program? How did the program and Beachbody help you overcome that challenge?
The biggest challenge for me was committing the time to do the workouts at home from a DVD, and not in a gym setting. I had knee surgery a few years back, so I was concerned that there might be issues with some of the workouts. Not only was I able to punch through those issues, my wife Sandra did the workouts with me, as well as drink Shakeology. Beachbody helped me to get a great start in not only dropping the weight, but building muscles that I forgot existed, as well muscles I didn’t even know were there. My first week was rough, because I was sore in areas of my butt that I had never felt before. Through persistence, I stayed with it, and was ecstatic when I hit my goal weight of 200 pounds, a 20-pound loss of weight in three weeks. I terminated my gym membership immediately, and have completed five rounds of 21 Day Fix.
What in particular did you like about the program you chose?
21 Day Fix helped me to figure out the portion sizes for each meal during the day. This was a key area for me, as I didn’t know what constituted a healthy portion and how many food portions I could have each day. Having several meal plans to choose from helped me to zero in on what was best for me. The exercises helped target numerous areas of my body, and the variety in the workouts helped to keep my heart rate up. I can feel the burn associated with each specific exercise. Some of them are challenging, which pushes me harder during the workouts! The exercises are really low-impact and don’t require expensive equipment to purchase. I also like that I don’t have to fight the local gym rats and the “selfie” takers just to get to equipment for my workouts. Our living room gives us the opportunity to work out together and not have to fight for space at the gym. There’s nothing more irritating than someone who does minimal gym work and takes selfies, proclaiming they worked out. Puleeeease!
Describe the results you achieved with your Beachbody program. Which achievements are you proud of?
Losing 20 pounds in three weeks, well, I can’t say enough! It was great to notice the reduction in my waistline, not to mention being able to see a four-pack of abs developing. I haven’t seen any of my abs in quite some time, and this just motivates me to keep going with Beachbody programs. I have noticed a very big reduction in weight from my legs, butt, and stomach when I look in the mirror. I see more muscle tone and the flab has been replaced by tightness and a sculpted appearance. I am very proud of myself for having made the decision to get off my butt and ride this amazing transformation. Excuses have been replaced by a willingness to succeed! As of Jan. 30, 2016, I weighed in at 182 pounds after finishing the fifth round of 21 Day Fix. My goal is to tone up even more, and I am enjoying the fact that I am fit at 50 years old!
How has your life changed since completing your Beachbody program?
Beachbody has changed my life to where I am now really focused on getting in the best shape of my life. I am 50 years of age, and I want my body to reflect that of a younger man. I want people to see my progress and success posts on Facebook, which I hope and pray will motivate them to take charge of their fitness and health, and join me! With knowledge comes a better person. 21 Day Fix teaches you how to be that better person through proper nutrition and targeted exercises. It’s a proven plan that anyone can follow; all they have to do is Decide, Commit, and Succeed. I am also spreading the word via Facebook about being a Beachbody Coach, and I hope to help anyone reach their fitness goals. I am also wanting to build a solid business, and I know Beachbody will help me get there! I am on a great team and the only path I see is up, up, up! I have been diagnosed with high blood pressure, and what I have noticed since losing weight is my blood pressure going down. After a recent check-up in January 2016, my blood pressure was so fantastic at 117/70, my doctor discussed reducing my medication!o My knees and feet don’t hurt as much either! All my blood work came back excellent, with my cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood sugar being in great condition! My doctor told me to keep doing what I was doing, and was really proud of my accomplishments! The man I am today differs from the man who saw him in May 2015.
How did participating in a Challenge Group help you reach your goals? How did your group support you and keep you accountable?
I am part of a Challenge Group run by my upline Diamond Coach, and all of the Coaches on my team are part of it as well. Participating in a Challenge Group helps to hold all of us accountable by making sure we do our workouts everyday, as well as follow the meal plan and drink Shakeology. Posting about the positive effects of weight loss and better fitness serves to inspire and motivate others. Positive reinforcement is key to any successful endeavor, and doing this in a fitness Challenge Group is a must. As a matter of fact, it is non-negotiable. The group support is phenomenal, and I just recently issued a challenge called Plank Warz. I posted a video of myself doing a plank to see how long I could hold it before collapsing. That has prompted others to do so, and is actually fun and competitive.
How did your Team Beachbody Coach support you on your journey?
Chris Reed was very supportive and held us accountable to our commitment to stay on course with 21 Day Fix and Shakeology. I can’t say enough good things about Chris, and the encouragement and support he has shown me and my wife on this journey to reach our fitness goals. We have gone to their house for gatherings, and he makes everyone on the team feel like they are part of the family. Relationships are important in this fitness journey, as well as on the business side of Beachbody. Chris Reed and Kodi Reed are rock stars and a great example to follow!
How did a Beachbody supplement, nutritional product, or program (such as Shakeology or Beachbody Ultimate Reset) support your transformation? What are the greatest benefits you gained? Did you see benefits to your energy, sleep, mood/mental clarity, or digestion/regularity?
Shakeology has been a wonderful start to the morning, as I drink it for breakfast before leaving the house to work. My favorite way to mix it is in the blender with some ice, so it is like a frozen shake. I really do like the vanilla flavor! I recently started blending in frozen berries, so it looks like a purple Barney the Dinosaur drink. Great flavor! The greatest benefits I have noticed are increased energy and my mental clarity has become sharper. Working in law enforcement, you have to be aware of lots of things in your environment, as it is ever changing. In the areas of regularity, all I can say is things are “flowing” so much better 😉 Seventy dense foods combined in one drink — Shakeology rocks!
