Tell us about your life before you started the program. How did you feel about yourself and your body?
My life before starting the 21 Day Fix was miserable. I had already had two knee surgeries in the past three years and was sure I was going to need a replacement soon.* I would get up every day, eat breakfast and then go right to the recliner and use my laptop until I had to go to work. At work I would sit all day at a computer until it was time to go home. At home I was very sedentary, eating dinner on the couch and watching TV until it was time for bed. I had fooled myself into thinking that this was the way it was going from now on. I did not like the way I looked but was convinced there was nothing I could do about it.
What inspired you to change your life and begin your transformation journey?
My wife has always been trying to get me to eat healthier but to no avail. I would usually end up sabotaging her healthier lifestyle by bringing unhealthy treats into the house. At one point last year my wife told me that she needed to stop worrying about me and concentrate on herself because she was unhappy with the way she felt. She asked me to please not tempt her, but that she wouldn’t interfere with what I was doing. I’m not exactly sure why that statement hit me the way it did, but maybe it meant to me that I would be on my own and that sounded lonely. Before starting the 21 Day Fix in February of 2015, I started making some small changes to my eating habits, but not fully committing to any lifestyle changes. A close family member knew that we were trying to make some much needed changes and told us about her experience with the 21 Day Fix. I was intrigued but afraid to give up so many of the foods that I loved. It wasn’t until February that I was ready to commit.
What is the greatest challenge you faced before beginning the program? How did the program and Beachbody® help you overcome that challenge?
My greatest challenge was going to be the exercise. I have never exercised in any capacity that I can remember. Because my knee and back hurt, I would avoid exercise so as not to aggravate it. But, when I began the program on February 16th, 2015 I knew I had to go all in or nothing. I started out following Kat because she made it seem obtainable and Autumn’s encouragement really kept me motivated. Anything that had to do with being on the floor, I would modify and do sitting on my couch. As the months progressed, I became more and more confident and have begun to do most of the exercises that the others do in the videos.
What in particular did you like about the program you chose?
I really liked the portion container in the 21 Day Fix. I have never watched portions before and was surprised how much bad stuff I had been eating. But on the other hand, when I was measuring all the good for me foods, I was surprised at how much it actually turned out to be. There were meals where I didn’t think I would be able to finish!
Describe the results you achieved with your Beachbody program. Which achievements are you proud of?
One of my biggest goals was to be able to go into any store and buy a pair of jeans off the rack in a size 42 waist. I have achieved that goal and surpassed it by 8 inches. I am now in a 34 inch waist. When I started to lose weight, I couldn’t believe how all my clothes sizes started to shrink. I also began developing muscle that was really foreign to me.
How has your life changed since completing your Beachbody program?
My life has done a 180. It sounds so cliché, but really, my energy is through the roof. I am 55 years old and I am doing things I haven’t done in 20 years. I am able to climb stairs without total dread. I can ride a bike again. I can walk longer distances than ever before. I’ve even given up taking naps, which is something I looked forward to on the weekend.
How did your Team Beachbody® Coach support you on your journey?
Jamie told me from the start that I was not a fat person, but someone who had fat. She had always said that she had no doubt that I could be a healthier person, I just needed to find out for myself. She’s never judged me or made me feel bad about the way I was. She is also the one who encouraged me to tell my story, because I don’t really like talking bout myself.
