Tell us about your life before you started the program. How did you feel about yourself and your body?
I lived a life of solitude, keeping to myself and a very small circle of friends. I was an introvert with little desire for the public lifestyle. I was very uncomfortable with my physical appearance and uneasy with my physical prowess. My energy level was low. I didn’t appreciate the limited places I could shop for my attire. Just as importantly, my mindset was fluctuating with every unhealthy meal I ate. Prior to accepting the Challenge, I tried to work out on my own. My workout efforts were like a series of bad hiccups — start, pause, and go again. During the months of September and October 2014, with all of the stop-and-go efforts, I lost about 10 to 20 pounds. I was feeling frustrated with my initial attempts at self-help, so-to-speak. Although I had dropped some weight, I still was not anywhere near a complete or comprehensive change in my body, mind, and spirit.
What inspired you to change your life and begin your transformation journey?
I wanted to improve not only my physical health, but also my mental health. I suffer from anxiety/depression, and I learned the wonder of having endorphins from working out. I knew if I wanted to better myself, I had to harness that “power,” so-to-speak. I had been going in the opposite direction from where I wanted to be. I would be winded just going to get some water. I wanted to prove to myself that I could actually set my mind to something and achieve it. More importantly, I wanted more energy and to be able to live longer. I wanted to be able to help my mother and father out. I even plan on being a father myself in the distant future, and I’d like to live long enough to raise my children and be able to play with them just as my father did for me. Those memories are indispensable, and I know I wouldn’t be who I am today without them.
What is the greatest challenge you faced before beginning the program? How did the program and Beachbody help you overcome that challenge?
There were several challenges; commitment, continuity, and consistency, which I didn’t have harnessed as a single force. Consequently, I wasn’t hitting on “all cylinders” so I couldn’t sustain the long run. The old adage of “life is not a sprint” seemed apropos. I entered the world of Beachbody training fully committed to turning my life around. I invited Tony Horton and Beachbody into my exercise domain. I refused to begin or end my day without completing the Tony Horton/Beachbody regiment. I poured myself into each exercise phase and into completing each round. I was singularly devoted to completing the Challenge.
What in particular did you like about the program you chose?
I liked how once I got into the routine, my results were so fast. It would seem like a blink of an eye and I would be down another 30 pounds. I liked how it was a full-body workout. My strength was increased, but so was my agility. I could move faster than ever before. I even tested out my own limits after never touching a treadmill, and I couldn’t believe how far or fast I could run once I did. I even enjoyed Tony’s humor as it helped break up the intensity of the workouts. I liked the program so much, I’ve completed it a total of three times now, and am currently finished with my first phase of my fourth round of doubles.
Describe the results you achieved with your Beachbody program. Which achievements are you proud of?
I’ve gone down from a size 3XL to a medium (even small for some makers) shirt. I was somewhere near a size 42+ for pants and now I’m a size 30. Before starting, I couldn’t even do a single pull-up, sit-up, or push-up. Now I can keep up with the programs with using little to no modifiers. I’m really just proud that I found an alternate means to battling my depression and anxiety. I like that others can finally see myself how I’ve seen myself all along.
How has your life changed since completing your Beachbody program?
I am more active, social, and overall happy. It’s given me the confidence to do my best and be all I can be. I can for sure say I will never be the same person I was, but in a good way. I’ve found out more of who I am during these programs, and I’ve taken a lot of lessons from them as well. Things Tony would repeat like, “Do your best and forget the rest,” I was finding that I would apply to everyday life — not just my workouts. I’ve made more progress in life during these months doing P90X than I have ever before. I am so thankful to have my life back.
