Tell us about your life before you started the program. How did you feel about yourself and your body?
I had never really cared about my physical health before I started the program. I ate awful foods, I drank a lot, I was not healthy and didn’t care about it. But as I got bigger I started to care a little, but not enough to actually do anything about it. As I got older and started to develop weight-related health problems I knew something needed to change. I also suffered from depression.1 I self-sabotaged and thought I wasn’t worth it. My self-esteem was tied to my weight. I didn’t feel like I deserved to be skinny or attractive.
What inspired you to change your life and begin your transformation journey?
It was a combination of a lot of factors really. Health and social mainly. Ruptured a disc in my back when I was in high school (partially because of how heavy I was), then I was diagnosed with sleep apnea, and the very real possibility of diabetes loomed in the future.1 I was also finally out of college, my stress levels in my professional life were much lower than compared to college (I’m an electrical engineer and sit at a desk most days). I was changing as a person and wanted different things out of life. It was time to make the change. I faced my fears and sought counseling for my depression.1 I wanted my outside to match my inside.
What is the greatest challenge you faced before beginning the program? How did the program and Beachbody® help you overcome that challenge?
Staying motivated. For the first two years, I worked on losing weight I played the weight roller coaster game. In 2012, I lost 55 lbs doing P90X, then work got ridiculous and for most of 2013 I managed to keep the gains to a minimum, but I wasn’t working out consistently, I was traveling like crazy, and I certainly wasn’t eating well. I slipped into old habits. I gained 39 lbs back before P90X3 came out in December 2013. With my busy schedule, it was much easier to stick to than P90X. Then I found an awesome Beachbody Coach and joined a Challenge Group. This was the #1 thing that helped me overcome and push on. It helped me with motivation, but also taught me that I have to be disciplined. Motivation will leave you, so it’s important to keep your goals in mind and be disciplined and just push play.
What in particular did you like about the program you chose?
P90X3 was a great way for me to make fitness a habit because it was much easier to fit into my schedule and better suited to my fitness level. I lost a good majority of my actual weight with P90X3. After 3 rounds of P90X3 I did Body Beast with Half Marathon training. I only lost a few pounds doing this, but I lost 2% body fat in just my first round! I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon. I would not have been able to stick with Body Beast though if I hadn’t learned discipline from P90X3.
Describe the results you achieved with your Beachbody program. Which achievements are you proud of?
Looking better, feeling better, and having something resembling muscle definition for the first time in my life! Turns out I really like it and want to keep pushing on. But the best results from the Beachbody program are like I said above – teaching my discipline and to just go press play, even if you don’t want to.
How has your life changed since completing your Beachbody program?
I have a lot more confidence, I’m turning into a “fitness guy” and honestly I’ve grown as a person and individual since doing this. It’s been just earth-shatteringly good for my life.
How did participating in a Challenge Group help you reach your goals? How did your group support you and keep you accountable?
The TD Nation (my Challenge Group) is incredible. Seeing real people get real results in real time, was just amazing. You know it’s not just actors and fake people or a marketing scheme. It’s real world results from hard work and dedication. It gives you motivation, teaches you discipline, and keeps you pressing play every day. I recently got to meet the people from TD Nation in real life and ran the Illinois Half Marathon with a lot of them. They are genuine people looking to help that have really shared and done the journey. They know where you came from, they’ve been there. They are the best support system I could imagine for losing weight and getting healthy.
How did your Team Beachbody® Coach support you on your journey?
Allan is always there to help me when I have questions. He’s helped me with exercise schedules, making hybrid workouts, calorie goals, food planning, and just generally giving me the tools and support I need to succeed.
How did a Beachbody Supplement or Nutritional Product or Program (such as Shakeology® or Beachbody Ultimate Reset®) support your transformation? What are the greatest benefits you gained? Did you see benefits to your energy, sleep, mood/mental clarity, digestion/regularity?
Shakeology is just a great snack to give you that extra push between your workouts and dinner. The results and recovery formula was awesome, it really helps cut down soreness. I had a friend wait for me at mile 7 during my marathon to hand me a shaker bottle of results and recovery formula, it really helped!2
