Tell us about your life before you started the program. How did you feel about yourself and your body?
During the past 10 years, I watched my weight go from 185 pounds to at least 375 pounds in December 2014. I was never concerned about what I was eating or how much of it I had. I just ate till I was too full. I would have several beers or sweet alcoholic drinks, more nights than not, and stay up late eating junk food. I always felt like the heavy kid, even when I weighed 185 pounds. I never felt like my weight slowed me down much though, which lulled me into not thinking my rising weight was really a big problem. Within the past couple of years though, I could feel myself being slowed down and started missing out on things because of my size. Although I knew my weight was affecting my life negatively, I just didn’t have enough motivation to make any lasting changes.
What inspired you to change your life and begin your transformation journey?
Seeing 375 pounds on the scale scared me! That New Year’s, I started eating clean. My wife helped me put together a food plan, and I began losing weight. She would ask me if I would go to the gym with her, but I was happy losing weight the way I was at the moment, by just eating a bit better. I had lost 25 pounds when my father passed away in his back yard from a heart attack on Father’s Day 2015. I got sidetracked from my diet for a few months, but luckily I hadn’t gained much weight back. My wife had competed in a bodybuilding competition in September 2015. After losing my dad, watching what my wife had done at the gym, and knowing I had to get myself in shape — not only for myself but for my wife, children, and family — I realized I had run out of excuses of why I couldn’t work out. I didn’t want to live the life I had been living. I am ashamed of what I let myself become. I had no other choice.
What is the greatest challenge you faced before beginning the program? How did the program and Beachbody help you overcome that challenge?
My greatest challenge has always been myself. I have always found excuses for why I couldn’t keep an exercise program. “My leg hurts, so I can’t work out for the next week!” I hated going to the gym. It was boring, and I just didn’t want to work out. Having the INSANITY DVDs has helped me bridge the gap that I didn’t feel motivated enough to go to the gym and get a workout in. Access to quick, effective workouts has allowed me to keep on track with my goals and has become an ever growing part of my daily routine!
What in particular did you like about the program you chose?
The high-intensity workouts in a reasonable amount of time is one of the biggest perks of INSANITY. I don’t have to drive to the gym and work out for hours to know I got a good workout in.
Describe the results you achieved with your Beachbody program. Which achievements are you proud of?
Since beginning a lifestyle change on September 21, 2015, I have lost 106 pounds! I have massive amounts of energy, and feel like I’m 18 years old again. My children comment on how they like me without a huge belly anymore. I have been able to go “shopping” in my own closet, and am able to wear clothes that haven’t fit in 10 years. I have had several moments of achievement over the past seven months. The first big one, and probably one of the hardest, was breaking below 300 pounds. I had plateaued at about 305 for a few weeks. I would edge closer to 299, but would gain a pound or so back every few days. The morning I finally weighed under 300 was a very big emotional milestone. When I broke under 275 — my weight when I got married — it was a happy goal, but not as big as the 299 pounds goal. I’m now at 250, the weight my father and I would talk about wishing we could both be at, and how good it would feel. It does dad, but we are not finished!
How has your life changed since completing your Beachbody program?
I have much more energy and am gaining confidence. I am not ashamed of what size clothes I wear anymore, and am excited to be able to shop in a normal store again. People have started asking me for advice on how to get started on getting in shape. They ask me! There isn’t an aspect of my life that hasn’t been affected positively from my weight loss. Achieving what I have in the time I have has shown me I’m capable of achieving anything I set my heart on.
How did your Team Beachbody Coach support you on your journey?
