Tell us about your life before you started the program. How did you feel about yourself and your body?
I was overweight, and like anyone who is overweight, I wasn’t happy about it at all, but I thought it was just my “body type.” I could never be one of those Success Stories that you see on TV. I smoked, drank occasionally, and worked behind a desk. I just didn’t see any way that I could change who I had become, even though I was unhappy about who I was and what I looked like. I had always been a big guy (over 250 pounds since high school), and I thought it was just who I was meant to be. But it was always there, that fire to be something more than I was, to be better than what I had become.
What inspired you to change your life and begin your transformation journey?
I went to the doctor for a wellness exam, and got the usual “you’re overweight; you have high cholesterol; you have high blood pressure; you need to quit smoking and drinking and take action or you’ll be lucky to see 50 years old.” Yeah, I had heard it all before. Oh well, right? I was playing backyard volleyball with my family in July 2015, talking about how out of shape I was and how I needed to do something about it with no real intentions of changing anything. When my cousin told me he had been doing INSANITY, I had never even heard of it before and was skeptical how some video an hour a day could change your whole life. He invited me over to try it out, so I did on his 53rd day. I kept going until he completed it, digging deeper through the soreness and running in place for the push-ups that I couldn’t do. Shaun T is truly motivational, and little did I know I was about to change my life forever.
What is the greatest challenge you faced before beginning the program? How did the program and Beachbody help you overcome that challenge?
My cousin quit the INSANITY program after his 60th day. I couldn’t stop there, not after seven days of madness with Shaun T. So I ordered INSANITY and began my road to success on August 1, 2015. Quitting smoking on August 4 wasn’t the hardest part of my journey though; committing to the program and changing my eating habits were by far the hardest part. By the third day, I was so sore that I could barely get out of bed, but I was ready to Dig Deeper. I ordered Shakeology and contacted my Coach about good carbs, bad carbs, protein, etc. I had never experienced any of this. I just knew what I wanted the end result to be. I had rough days, but the community and the Coaches are here to help see you through no matter what. This is more than just a workout; this is a family, a community of like-minded folks that will go out of their way to help you get to be all you can be. I am thankful for all the support I have had in this process.
What in particular did you like about the program you chose?
I must admit: before INSANITY, I was pretty lazy. Shaun T looking into the camera and telling you to Dig Deeper, pump though it, and counting down the seconds is all that got me through at times. He is an exercise genius and his mentality of “you’re part of the family now; get fit or get out,” inspired me to give my all every day. Even with being bigger and knowing that I couldn’t do everything they could do, I would run in place until I could. I really felt like I was there with him, and that he was telling me to straighten my legs and use correct form. It’s like he knows exactly what you’re going to do wrong, and he will be on you for it before you have the chance to do anything incorrectly.
Describe the results you achieved with your Beachbody program. Which achievements are you proud of?
I mean if losing 68 pounds in six months isn’t enough, my cholesterol and blood pressure are normal now.† I actively play sports with my family and friends. Coming from never being really athletic, it’s huge to me to be spiking the volleyball and getting really close to dunking a basketball. At first, I wasn’t even able to jump and touch the net. I think that I am most proud of the community here at Beachbody and how many lifelong friends I have made that are like-minded individuals seeking to help others out in any way they can. That was crucial to me in the hard times. Always having someone there to say: “Hey, I care. I want to see you through and get the results you want.” That can be life-changing at times.
How has your life changed since completing your Beachbody program?
I am almost always active now. I eat so much better and still drink Shakeology every day. I have made a whole family of real Beachbody friends that I follow and talk to on Facebook. I try to inspire them to overcome who they are the same way so many have helped me. The best thing we can all do is accept change, appreciate who we are, better ourselves, and help others every way we can. After all, that is truly what Beachbody is all about: groups of expert trainers all coming together to help you become what you have always wanted to be. As Shaun T says in his Cardio Conditioning: “I’m not here to hurt you people. I just want to make you better.” I went for a wellness exam after my first time through the program. After my first time completing INSANITY, I went from 275 pounds down to 229 pounds. I ended up doing it from August 1st to November 15th, then January 1st though March 1st, where I went from 230 pounds all the way down to now at 205 pounds, and from 32.1 percent body fat to 12.1 percent body fat. Even my doctor is impressed with how much Beachbody has changed my life.
How did participating in a Challenge Group help you reach your goals? How did your group support you and keep you accountable?
I just joined a Challenge Group actually, Team Endurafit, which is a huge group under my Coach on Facebook. We all push each other and hold each other accountable to track calories, macronutrients, and overall fitness every day, as well as explain the program we’re doing and join each other in Skype or FaceTime chats together. We will reach out if someone is missing their information and help them every way we can to keep them on the track to success just like so many have had before.
How did your Team Beachbody Coach support you on your journey?
Definitely with my entire diet. I am a picky eater when it comes to healthy food, so he helped me put together a meal plan to suit me the best and get the maximum results I can. I went at INSANITY alone from the beginning and made a horrible mistake of too high of a calorie deficit. He brought me out of it and kept me from plateauing while keeping me excited about getting the best results I can. Reaching out to your Coach from Day One is extremely important. They will help you figure out exactly what you need to do to make you better, especially when you are clueless, like I was, about fitness in general. Larry Shelton and his whole group of Beachbody Coaches are amazing!
How did a Beachbody supplement, nutritional product, or program (such as Shakeology or Beachbody Ultimate Reset) support your transformation? What are the greatest benefits you gained? Did you see benefits to your energy, sleep, mood/mental clarity, or digestion/regularity?
This is kind of awkward to talk about, but really important nonetheless. I wasn’t regular. Typically, I went to the restroom once per day, or even once every two to three days. I tried to eat healthy but that didn’t consist of much fiber like it should have been early on when trying to do this all on my own. Shakeology changed the game for me. I go a minimum of twice a day now, feel energized every morning right after I drink my Shakeology, and head to work, where it also increased my mental performance as an automation electrical engineer where there is quite a bit of thinking involved. It lasts all day as I head into the studio at the gym for INSANITY. I definitely recommend it to everyone. By the third day of using Shakeology, I could feel a noticeable difference in my daily routine in the restroom and in physical exercise.
