Results vary depending on starting point and effort. Derek is an Independent Team Beachbody Coach.
Tell us about your life before you started the program. How did you feel about yourself and your body?
Before I started on this journey, I was a yo-yo gym goer. I’d go for weeks/months at a time, but not seeing results was frustrating. I was doing it on my own and going nowhere fast. My diet wasn’t horrible, but it wasn’t great either. It was easy for “life” to get me out of the routine. As time went on, I got bigger and bigger. I felt sluggish and just awful about myself. Then, a few months back, my wife and I separated. We have a 6 year old son who I take care of full time, so getting to the gym got even harder. I work from home, so I have a very sedentary lifestyle. I was looking for something that could get me out of my funk. I needed a workout that fit into my busy, now single father, lifestyle.
What inspired you to change your life and begin your transformation journey?
As a single parent, I wanted to make sure that I was not only there for my son, but also to be a good example to him. I wanted to be able to be a part of his life, and not just on the park bench watching him play. I knew I needed something to get me out of my funk, and at first, I thought maybe personal training would help. Well, the cost of PT, plus all the supplements they want to up sell you made it more than cost-prohibitive. I happened to see a Facebook post from a Coach, Ricardo Marquez, talking about a new 25 minute workout program from home! It was just what I was looking for! Once I did FOCUS T25, I was hooked! Since then, I’ve now done P90X3, INSANITY MAX:30, and am currently doing 21 Day Fix EXTREME. All “shorter” workouts!
What is the greatest challenge you faced before beginning the program? How did the program and Beachbody® help you overcome that challenge?
The biggest challenge I faced before beginning was just the motivation to go to the gym. The time it took, and the lack of support made it almost impossible to want to go to the gym. With T25 being 25 minutes, and P90X3 only 30 minutes, my “time excuse” was pretty much eliminated. It was nice that I didn’t have to wake up super early, just to go to the gym; I could literally roll out of bed and start working out. The programs really made it easy to want to push play. Working with my Coach and everyone else in our Challenge Group was great. We all encouraged each other to keep pushing. We got through it together.
What in particular did you like about the program you chose?
I loved that they were only 25 minutes and 30 minutes (T25, P90X3, MAX:30, 21DFX). It’s soooooo much easier to get over the “mental” aspect of working out when it’s only 25 or 30 minutes. Every once in a while you just wake up and don’t feel like working out. But then, your brain says, “but it’s only 25 minutes!” So much of working out is mental. That these programs were only 25 and 30 minutes made it easy to conquer the “lazies”. I also loved the trainers. They’re awesome at what they do and help show you the proper way to do an exercise and give you that motivation.
Describe the results you achieved with your Beachbody program. Which achievements are you proud of?
When I started T25, I was 205 lbs and about 24% body fat. I’m 6’1″, so it’s not like I was carrying a huge amount of weight. But I looked “soft” and “soggy.” No tone, whatsoever. After just 10 weeks, I dropped 12 lbs. and about 5% body fat. After doing P90X3 I dropped an additional 18 lbs, and about another 5% body fat. I’ve been able to maintain my results through INSANITY MAX:30 as well. I can actually see my abs poking through! I’m in clothing sizes that I haven’t been in since high school, 20 years ago. In fact, at my 20 year reunion, I was quite the topic of conversation, from what I was told. Several people told me I looked amazing and were really impressed with what I’d done. That made me feel amazing because I was always the shy kid in the back of the room in high school.
How has your life changed since completing your Beachbody program?
I have more energy and motivation to keep going. Now that I’m seeing results, I don’t want to stop. And now I want to help others do it too. If I can do it, anyone can. I know that’s totally cliche to say, but it’s true. The real “proof is in the pudding” was when my ex-wife saw me and had to pick her jaw up off the floor. She kept saying “wow” and just staring at me. Felt pretty good 🙂 My now 7 year old son has even started working out with me. Don’t get me wrong, he can’t do “Genie Tuck Jumps” or “Burpee Lunges”, but seeing that he wants to emulate me is all the motivation I need now to just push play.
How did participating in a Challenge Group help you reach your goals? How did your group support you and keep you accountable?
We were all in it together. We supported each other, and kept each other accountable through Facebook posts, photos, and words of encouragement. It was nice to know that others were in it with me.
How did your Team Beachbody® Coach support you on your journey?
He answered every single question I threw at him and just really kept me on track.
How did a Beachbody Supplement or Nutritional Product or Program (such as Shakeology® or Beachbody Ultimate Reset®) support your transformation? What are the greatest benefits you gained? Did you see benefits to your energy, sleep, mood/mental clarity, digestion/regularity?
I used Shakeology, Results and Recovery, and Energy and Endurance. Shakeology helped me get my nutrition right, lose weight and curb my sweet tooth. Overall, through my Beachbody programs and Shakeology, I’ve lost 30 pounds, 11% body fat and have lowered my cholesterol in under 7 months.2
