Tell us about your life before you started the program. How did you feel about yourself and your body?
Growing up, I was always petite and very athletic playing soccer, hockey, and rugby. Weight and fitness were never something I had to work for. My weight stayed at 107 lbs. throughout high school and as an undergraduate. But once I hit 25 and was accepted into physiotherapy school, my health and fitness just got put on the back burner, putting me into a “lazy/slump” rutt. I had very little energy as I was just starting my career and struggling with work/life balance. Working long days, I only managed to eat maybe once a day, and therefore had no energy and was constantly tired. In December 2015, I weighed myself after being extremely frustrated with the way my pants had been fitting. For the first time in my life, I had a tummy roll (yuck)! I weighed the most I had ever weighed in my life, which I know to a lot of people really isn’t that bad. But when you’re used to always being a certain size and fitness level, to me it felt just as bad. I was angry and frustrated with where my health was but so overwhelmed with how to get started. I knew I had to change my eating habits, but I didn’t know how or what I “should” or “shouldn’t” eat. I hated the idea of counting calories and/or weighing my food at every meal. I knew it wasn’t practical for my lifestyle. But when I heard about 21 Day Fix from my friend and Coach Jessica Ritchie, and how simple the container system was, I thought “Wow, that actually seems like something I could pull off and if I’m eating better, maybe I’ll have more energy to work out.” Getting the 21 Day Fix package/workouts was a bonus as I initially only wanted the meal planning stuff.
What inspired you to change your life and begin your transformation journey?
Honestly, I knew I had to make diet changes, particularly to my habit of only eating once a day, and also probably eat a more well-rounded diet. But I just didn’t know how to get back on track and found myself overwhelmed with where to start. And I would say my inspiration with getting started with 21 Day Fix was my good friend and now Beachbody Coach, Jessica! She was the one who told me about it one day in a managers’ meeting when I asked her about her little green container! She showed me how easy it really was to get started, and I knew it would fit into my work life as her schedule was quite similar to mine.
What is the greatest challenge you faced before beginning the program? How did the program and Beachbody help you overcome that challenge?
The two things that come to mind for me are: First, figuring out how to meal plan and prep my food for the whole day/week and then making a conscious effort to go get my food and munch on it throughout my day (being a physiotherapist in a private clinic, you don’t often get a set lunch break). Second, I found getting started with the exercise programs quite difficult because of how hard I actually found them, and accepting just how out of shape I had gotten. I had to get out of my own head. I was able to do that by focusing on what Autumn says in her videos. I found her motivating, and it also seems like she knew when you got to the “I wanna quit” point and told you to keep going. I also like how in the workouts you can see some of the people struggling because they are getting tired, which made me feel like “OK, it’s not just me being out of shape!” When I first started the workouts, I could barely finish them. I used 0–3-lb. weights and always modified; today I use 10–15 lbs.
What in particular did you like about the program you chose?
The thing I like best about 21 Day Fix is it’s not a diet, it’s a way to help you adapt to a certain lifestyle. I love the simplicity of the containers and serving chart! I also love the workouts, because even though I’ve been doing the program for almost four months now, I still find it kicks my butt every day.
Describe the results you achieved with your Beachbody program. Which achievements are you proud of?
I’ve lost a number of inches combined, but more importantly for me, I’ve toned back up and feel much stronger and healthier. I have more energy, both at work and at home. It has helped with my depression and anxiety, making me a happier, more positive person all the way around. I think what I’m most proud of is that I was able to get myself back on track, and for the first time in five years, I feel like my old self again 🙂
How has your life changed since completing your Beachbody program?
It has helped rebuild some of the self-confidence I had lost over the past few years. It has motivated me to want to keep going and possibly set new goals for myself. I’m contemplating training for a bodybuilding competition. I have more energy and enthusiasm for life and getting out there to do things that I’ve always wanted to do!
How did participating in a Challenge Group help you reach your goals? How did your group support you and keep you accountable?
I saw that other people were trying their best to get their workouts in, and that they were sore all over and had days of struggle. We shared good recipe ideas and sent funny workout pics or motivating quotes.
How did your Team Beachbody Coach support you on your journey?
She’s always positive, knowledgeable on the products and how to get around the web page, and easy to get in contact with if you ever have any questions or are just having a blah day! I’m competitive, and she looks awesome/ripped! (LOL!) So it pushes me to keep pushing and not to “cheat” (haha).
How did a Beachbody supplement, nutritional product, or program (such as Shakeology or Beachbody Ultimate Reset) support your transformation? What are the greatest benefits you gained? Did you see benefits to your energy, sleep, mood/mental clarity, or digestion/regularity?
I found Shakeology helpful in giving me a good quick midday boost. I like how there were different recipes that came with it to change it up!
