Last year, I flew with my family to Hawaii for my cousin’s graduation in Oahu. I was stoked to be back in Hawaii and in the best shape of my life, but I was also nervous to spend 10 days with my entire family because, to be honest, I knew there would be unbearable temptations to eat poorly.
How is anyone supposed to eat healthy on vacation with a family full of foodies?
I wish I could tell you that we all ate healthfully the whole time, but this story’s more about what didn’t work for me.
Near the end of my trip, my family let me know they’d had enough of my self-righteous talk about healthy eating. Hopefully, you can learn from my mistakes!
Here’s what not to do:
1. Force feed your family nutritional facts that they don’t care about.
2. Make everyone around you feel bad for what they’re eating.
3. Feel miserable for not enjoying certain foods cause you’re afraid of gaining weight.
In Hawaii, they use the word mana to describe life energy. What I learned from this experience is that eating food to fuel an awesome life should come from a place of love and enjoyment, not fear.
Eating healthy is more than salad and lean proteins; it can be a balanced, fun, and creative expression of your soul.

Vanilla Shakeology Macadamia Nut Pineapple Balls
These tropical energy balls are made with coconut, pineapple, and macadamia nuts!
- ½ cup dried unsweetened pineapple, coarsely chopped
- ½ cup hot water
- 1 cup unsweetened shredded coconut, toasted, divided use
- ¾ cup macadamia nuts, chopped
- 2 scoops Vanilla Whey Shakeology
Combine pineapple and water in a medium microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high for 30 seconds. Let sit for 15 minutes. Set aside.
Combine ¾ cup coconut and macadamia nuts in a medium bowl; mix well. Set aside.
Place pineapple and water in a food processor (or blender). Pulse until mixture forms a consistency that is similar to applesauce.
Add pineapple mixture and Shakeology to coconut mixture; mix well. Mixture will be slightly wet and sticky.
Roll into 16 balls, about 1-inch in diameter each. Roll balls in remaining ¼ cup coconut.
Store refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
