Have you always been into fitness?

I’ve been into fitness my entire life. Growing up I was a dancer, gymnast, and was always outside playing sports. Dance fueled me to get into gymnastics. I always wanted to flip around and do the tumbling and whatever else I could do.

What was that like?

Gymnastics taught me a lot. It made me the athlete I am today because you learn so much core strength and balance and agility. My favorite apparatus was the beam. I wouldn’t be able to do a single thing today, but back then I liked doing backflips and other moves. But eventually, I was like, I’m getting really tall for this! It’s getting really hard to get my butt over my head like these other girls! I was like, maybe this isn’t the sport for me.

What did you move on to?

At 14 I decided to do my first fitness and figure competition. You get on stage and dance, but you also have to perform strength moves like one-handed push-ups and handstands and splits and all kinds of stuff.

Did you win?

Yes!

Nice! How many have you won since?

I don’t know how many competitions I’ve won anymore. I’ve been competing since I was 14 years old, and doing anywhere from three to five competitions a year. But my gym is covered in trophies, so I’ve been doing something right.

Do you still compete?

I still compete, but not as often. I’ve been really busy owning my own gym with my family but I do it every once in a while to let myself know I can get back into that kind of shape and get shredded like that. My clients like to see that I can do that stuff and be really strict too.

What’s your personal nutrition strategy?

A long time ago when I didn’t know anything about nutrition and how I should be eating for my shows, I cut out fat completely. At one point, I was on the treadmill getting ready for a show and I went to straighten out my ponytail and a chunk of my hair fell out. At that moment I was like, I need to educate myself and learn what I need to be eating. So now I don’t cut any food groups out. I just eat a healthy balance of everything every three hours. A lot of chicken, fish, brown rice, sweet potatoes, and vegetables. All day vegetables.

What’s your favorite?

Broccoli. I think the most bang for your buck is in broccoli.

How do you make it?

I’m a pretty plain eater, so as long as I’m getting the nutrients I need at the time I need them, I don’t care what it tastes like. It will get so bad that sometimes when I’m getting ready for a show I’ll have plain egg whites so often that I stand over the sink and eat it just in case I spit it out.

Do you drink Shakeology?

I do. I have a couple of my own recipes that I’ve made since I’ve been here. I use the Vanilla Shakeology and do a teaspoon of grated fresh ginger and a pear. The other one is with the Strawberry Shakeology, I do a cucumber and some lemon. It’s like refreshing and cold and crisp.

Sounds tasty! It’s all about getting the right stuff to help fuel your workouts. What’s your regimen these days?

I do a lot of speed work, sprint training, agility work, and weight training. I’ve loved weight training ever since I was young. I love upper-body exercises. I’m not a lower-body person. I can probably lift just as much with my upper body as with my legs. I like pull-ups and bench presses. My favorite body part to work is my back.

Why is that?

I’m good at it? [laughs] I can do a lot of pull-ups. They’re fun! [laughs]
