This week, something caught my eye in the food blogosphere. It wasn’t the chocolate-drizzled french fries that McDonalds will start selling next week (only in Japan, though). No, it was the $15 milkshakes developed at New York gastropub Black Tap. “Did you just order a five-dollar shake?” No, Vincent Vega, people are ordering $15 dollar milkshakes.
So, what do you get for $15? Here are the ingredients in three of the varieties:
The Red Velvet (middle) is a chocolate milkshake that comes with chocolate frosting, Hershey Kisses, red M&Ms and is topped with a two-layer red velvet cake and chocolate syrup.
The Cookie Milkshake (right) is a vanilla milkshake made with vanilla frosting and cookie crumbles. On top is placed a frosting filled cookie, more cookie crumbles, chocolate chips, whipped cream, and chocolate syrup.
Finally, there’s the Sweet and Salty Milkshake (left). This chocolate (or caramel) milkshake is lined with chocolate peanut butter, and sprinkled with M&Ms, pretzel rods, whipped cream, a Sugar Daddy, peanut butter cups, and chocolate syrup.
To say these milkshakes are over the top would be an understatement. They’re the kind of thing my inner 5-year-old dreams about. They’re like someone took that clown-faced Cone Head Ice Cream sundae from Friendly’s and put it on steroids.
These ice cream concoctions are nearly a foot tall and resemble a physics-defying art piece more than a sundae. And, given their calorie count, maybe they should be regarded as such. Because, despite their grandioseness on a level that rivals the overflowing cakes of Katherine Sabbath, each of these creamy desserts packs a wallop of calories. I turned to our in-house nutrition staff for an estimate of one of these tantalizing milkshakes.
“Based on the ingredients listed in the article and the picture, I’ve guestimated that the Sweet and Salty Milkshake is between 2500 and 3000 calories,” says Jodi CHHC, AADP. A further breakdown estimates approximately 149 grams of fat, 369 carbs, and 280 grams of sugar per sundae. I can’t say I’m surprised – these concoctions are about a foot tall, but whoa. Even if you split one of these between four people, that’s still one serious #cheatday.
